FMS 7th Grade Survives Cemetery Day

Students learn about traditions, symbols and community

by Mike Dailey

On October 20th, the 7th grade class was given the opportunity to explore the Fairfield Community cemeteries and visit some of the funeral homes in the area. This day allowed students to learn about history and traditions surrounding life and death within our community. Kent Whitney provided a slide show demonstrating the carvings of many headstones in the area and what the headstones represented for both the deceased and the living who visited the gravesite.

The students also spent time visiting the cemeteries, learning about the background and culture of our community cemeteries. The students learned of prominent community members who are buried throughout the cemeteries in Fairfield. The ultimate goal of the day was to acquaint students present day funeral practices which show honor and respect for the life and accomplishments of an individual.
